Task 3: The Importance of communication skills for engineers

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread
inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important).
It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult
concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”
Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

My perspective:
Indeed, non-engineer will definitely have a hard time understanding the engineering terms. Example: Foundation. My theory for non-engineer, the foundation will be the make-up that ladies use. However, the word foundation in engineering term means the supports of a building or structure. Nonetheless, I do personally think that this problem can be solved if both the engineers and non-engineers are will to work extra hard. For an instant, non-engineers can study the simple engineering terms and engineers can show similar examples to explain the concept.

  1. Hi Mikaela. As requested, here is my feedback on this post. I quite like that your post is interesting because you gave the perspective from females on what foundation is. I believe non-engineer used here should be non-engineers, plural form. Foundation is, not will be, make-up to ladies. Next, do use a comma after using the word, foundation. "Will" should be "willing". For instance is more appropriate in the last sentence of your perspective. We cannot really expect non-engineers to study simple engineering terms in my opinion hahah but i understand what you are trying to say. I think we can give better perspectives by adding value to what has already been said in the quote or explaining why she may think so. Thank you for reading this, I look forward to your feedback to mine.
