Summary "Cross Island" Draft #2

In the article “Nature Group seeks more information on the impact of Cross Island Line Site Investigations” Neo (2018) stated that nature lovers are encouraging the public to voice out their concerns towards the Land Transport Authority (LTA) regarding the drilling works for the future Cross Island MRT line. The public is anticipating whether LTA would release the whole process of monitoring program as "endangered" animals were spotted after site investigation was completed. They also doubt that LTA did a great job in the environmental impact assessment as the result was “mainly moderate” and was unwilling to provide comment nor evidence when asked. Nature lovers urge LTA to “provide assurance” and re-emphasize that monitoring program should continue even if the site investigation ends. They also highlighted that the monitoring methods and data are the keys to clear the doubts within the public as the information available was insufficient. I do understand the actions were taken by the nature group, however, I personally feel that the LTA did consider the nature reserve and is trying to provide the finest plan that benefits both the environment and residents.

Subject: Self-introduction

Dear Professor Brad,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as an attentive listener in your class. My name is Yi Mei or address me as Mikaela.

I graduated in the year of 2019 from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. I am currently pursuing Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land) in the Singapore Institute of Technology as a Year 1 student. I would say I took a detour before I enter NP; I went to the Institute of Technical Education for 2 years. The main reason why I continue my studies in engineering was that I was exposed to engineering since young as I have a family background of it which also increase my curiosity.

My friend once told me: “Mikaela, you are lying when you said that you are not good at communicating right?” It was half trued. I can be confident towards the audience while presenting however that only applies if I am comfortable with the people or the surroundings. In contrast to that, I will have sweaty hands and tend to increase the speaking rate thus leading to unclarity.

My target when this module comes to an end is being able to present myself confidently in a stressful environment and able to do the gesture with my hands other than placing in behind me as I do think nonverbal communication is as important as verbal communication. Reason being body language can leave a powerful impression.
I believe achieving my goals under your guidance and help will be much easier than achieving it myself.

Best Regards,

Mikaela Lai

Task 3: The Importance of communication skills for engineers

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread
inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important).
It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult
concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”
Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

My perspective:
Indeed, non-engineer will definitely have a hard time understanding the engineering terms. Example: Foundation. My theory for non-engineer, the foundation will be the make-up that ladies use. However, the word foundation in engineering term means the supports of a building or structure. Nonetheless, I do personally think that this problem can be solved if both the engineers and non-engineers are will to work extra hard. For an instant, non-engineers can study the simple engineering terms and engineers can show similar examples to explain the concept.

Who Am I?

HELLO! Welcome to my blog! I'm Mikaela from Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land).  Was previously graduated from Ngee Ann Poly; diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Something about me; I prefer studying in school than at home. One of the biggest reason is I LOVE TO PROCRASTINATE! BUT BUT BUT, I will still do my work when it's near to the due date. So please do not be afraid when doing group work with me OK?!

Let's graduate together!
